The test case (excel) template is still be using by small startups who cannot afford tools available in market and having too small team to use open source tools available or fresher’s who are new in software testing fields.
The excel template can be used commonly by a team with OneDrive or Google Drive so it will be easy to maintain and accessible too.
If you have a good template for test cases, it will become much easier for your team to maintaining your test cases which can be understood and used by everyone.
I personally feel that the all of your test cases should be placed in a one file instead of making a separate sheet for each test case. This way we can filter our test cases.

Below is the some suggestion to create a test case template in which two sheets are maintained
1.Test cases
In this template you will find numerous fields, but you can delete or hide the fields depending upon your need.
Module name: This is populated field (drop down) which is pre-defined in sheet two. It will help you to categories the test cases by module name.
Test case ID: Test case ID should be unique so we can identified the test case. It will be always suggested to follow some naming convention in ID related to module name.
Title: Title of the test case.
Pre-condition: This field is nothing but the requirement that needs to be done before running the test case.
Test data: This is a precise data set to be use to run the test case.
Test step: This field will give you step by step information about the test case.
Expected result: This field gives the expected result including error or message that should appear on screen.
Priority: You can set the priority by selecting the value (High, Medium, Low) from the drop down.
Version: It defines the version of the build.
Created by: This is populated field (drop down) which is pre-defined in sheet two. This will help to know the author of the test case.
Test case type: This is populated field (drop down) which is pre-defined in sheet two. It will categories the test case by its type whether it is a UI related, function related or other.
Total steps: It is nothing but the count of the steps to be followed to make complete run of test. It will defiantly help you to identify the execution time to be required.
All other fields are optional fields you can drop those depending on you project need.

How to add categories in dropdown –
- Type the list of valid entries in a single column. If you like, you can hide this column (select Format, Column, Hide) or keep it in different sheet of same excel book
- Select the cell or cells that will display the list of entries.
- Choose Data, Validation, and select the Settings tab.
- From the Allow drop-down list, select List.
- In the Source box, enter a range address or a reference to the items that you entered in step 1.
- Make sure the ‘In-cell dropdown’ box is selected.
- Click OK
