What are NOODP and NOYDIR meta tags ?
1 2 |
<meta name="robots" content="NOYDIR" /> <meta name="robots" content="NOODP" /> |
These meta tags are seen in many pages, but what are these used for and why.
NOODP: No Open Directory Project. Do not index in Open Directory Project.
NOYDIR: No Yahoo Directory. Do not index in Yahoo Directory
ODP: Open Directory Project also know as DMOZ is a reference library which is maintained by community editors who evaluate sites for inclusion in the directory. All the sites submitted are subjected to editor evaluation who follow a set of guidelines for a site’s inclusion or rejection in the directory. Every site is manually reviewed and description about the site is written and indexed under categories mentioned while submitting the site.
Yahoo Directory: It is also a human-edited web directory. Yahoo changed to crawler based listings in 2002 and so the Yahoo directory is no more used.
Web Crawlers
A web crawler is an internet bot that browses the World Wide Web for indexing the pages. With the advance of Web Crawlers human edited directories were suppressed.
If your site has been there on the web for a long and if it has been indexed in ODP or Yahoo Directory and if you want to override the description and keywords suggested by ODP, then you need to include these meta tags. This would avoid the crawlers to index the description and keywords from ODP or Yahoo Directory.
